Henryk Wujec is dead. Funeral in Powązki Military

Henryk Wujc’s funeral ceremony will take place on Monday. His body will be laid to rest at the Powązki Military Cemetery. An opposition activist in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, a legend of Solidarity, a former MP and advisor to President Bronisław Komorowski, died on August 15.

The funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 12.30 in the Temple of Divine Providence in Warsaw. After that, you will be taken to the Powązki Military Cemetery.

The family asked the participants of the funeral ceremonies not to bring flowers, but to support the victims of civil protests in Belarus.

The legend of Solidarity

Wujec, who was hospitalized in a serious condition, died on August 15 after a long illness. He was 79 years old.

He was an activist of the democratic opposition in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, a member of the Workers’ Defense Committee, an activist of “Solidarity”. In 1976, he co-organized aid for the repressed workers of factories in Ursus and Radom. After the outbreak of martial law, he was interned. Later, he was sent to prison several times. He took part in the Round Table talks.

After 1989, he sat in the Seym for many years. He was also the deputy minister of agriculture and advisor to president Bronisław Komorowski.

He was a physicist by training.

– A solid company, a hard-working man, calm and kind – described the character of Wujc on TVN24 by his opposition colleague Janusz Onyszkiewicz, former Minister of National Defense. He recalled that they spent almost eight months together in one cell in Białołęka. – We had a great time sitting together, without any cuts or blurring – recalled Onyszkiewicz.

As he said, Wujec was “a really wonderful, great man, extremely quiet, modest”. – It is a pity that there are few such people in Poland, and one of them has decreased – he added.

“Henia will be terribly missed”

– He was our friend Henio, a man terribly important to all of us – said Zbigniew Janas, an anti-communist opposition activist in an interview with TVN24. As he recalled, Wujec was “very common sense, it was always worth listening to”. – He was brave, dynamic, always ready for adventure – he added.

Janas recalled that Uncle’s face was always smiled. “We will miss Henio terribly,” he confessed.
