The agreement was respected by independent Malaysia until 2013, paying the descendants of the Sultan of Sulu a sum of money annually.

Kuala Lumpur stopped making payments after a bloody 2013 attack by supporters of the former Sultan of Sulu who wanted to reclaim the land from Malaysia. The heirs of the Sultan of Sulu have said they were not involved in the attack and are seeking arbitration over the suspension of payments.
