According to a senior EU diplomat, the decisive factor was the German government’s announcement of support for an oil embargo against Russia.

According to the ZDF, nothing now stands in the way of an EU oil embargo – swing countries such as Austria, Hungary and Slovakia have withdrawn their veto.

As noted, detailed questions, such as transitional periods, are still open.

“Probably the decision on the embargo should be made in the next few days, but implemented only in the next few months,” said Florian Neuhann, a ZDF correspondent in Brussels.

The reason for Germany’s change of course is probably the recent success in finding alternative oil suppliers. German Economics Minister Robert Habeck announced on April 26 that Germany’s dependence on Russian oil had dropped from 35% before the start of the war in Ukraine to 12% within eight weeks.
