Heavy fire destroys apartment: possibly lit, inhabited … (Heist-op-den-Berg)

Heist-op-den-Berg –

A violent fire broke out on Sunday morning completely destroyed an apartment in Itegem (Heist-op-den-Berg). Two other apartments are also uninhabitable. Initial findings indicate that the fire may have been started.

The fire in the apartment broke out at around 3.30am. At one point the fire was so intense that the flames burst through the roof. The other apartments were evacuated by the fire brigade. “There were no injuries. There were residents who were bothered by the smoke, “said Kim Bastiaens, spokeswoman for the Heist police.

Because the circumstances in which the fire took place are very suspicious, the police arrested the resident of the affected flat. The public prosecutor’s office has advanced an investigative judge. Both the lab and an expert conduct further research into the exact circumstances of the fire. “The initial findings indicate that the fire may have been started. A 43-year-old suspect has been arrested, ”says Lieselotte Claessens of the public prosecutor’s office.
