A tsunami warning has been issued following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in the Caribbean. The earthquake occurred on Tuesday at a depth of ten kilometers in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Jamaica, according to the USGS earthquake center.

The epicenter was therefore 125 kilometers northwest of the city of Lucea in Jamaica. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that “dangerous tsunami waves” are possible within a radius of 300 kilometers.

The US tsunami warning center issued a warning for Jamaica, Cuba, Belize, Honduras, Mexico and the Cayman Islands and spoke of a tidal wave up to one meter high.

Civil protection in the Cayman Islands called on the population in coastal and low-lying regions to move to higher areas as a precaution.

The Jamaican newspaper “Jamaica Observer” reported that the quake was felt in large parts of the Caribbean island. It took several seconds.
