Heat problems for Mediatek’s new processor

More heat than is good

Tests point to heat issues for Mediatek’s new Dimensity that can drastically affect performance.

As the mobile Vivo X100 Pro with Mediatek’s new processor Dimensity 9300 starts to come out, the first processor tests have also started to appear, and they indicate that the processor may have a heat problem.

Part of the background and the special thing about the Dimensity 9300 is its architecture consisting of “all big core” or only high-performance cores – four Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores. Otherwise, the usual is usually a combination of high- and low-performance cores.

Initial processor tests where the processor has been pushed to measure the performance show clear signs that “all big core” causes such heat problems that the processor lowers the performance to avoid overheating. Test results published by Sahil Karoul shows results with so-called CPU throttling where the processor is pushed to the maximum, that the performance drops to below 50 percent of the performance after 2 minutes. As a comparison, corresponding tests with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have shown that Qualcomm’s processor drops to 80 percent of performance after 10 minutes.
