Heart Attack Risk Rises 2 Weeks After Getting Covid-19

The risk of heart attack in Covid-19 positive people is the same for all ages.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — A number of experts warn that patients infected with the new type of corona virus (Covid-19) of all ages are at risk of experiencing heart attack within two weeks of contracting the disease. The vigilance comes following the findings of the latest research conducted by a team of scientists in Sweden.

According to researchers, the virus affects all organs in the body. Most people will overcome the attack of the virus that causes Covid-19 quickly, but not a few end up experiencing serious health problems and have to struggle with debilitating symptoms.

Researchers at Umeå University, Sweden looked at data from 86,000 Covid-19 patients. From there, a threefold increase in risk was found acute myocardial infarction and stroke in the first two weeks after infection new type of corona virus occur.

The team of scientists said that the results showed the same risk in all age groups. The studies conducted were also adjusted for known risk factors such as age, gender, and socioeconomic factors.

Study co-author Ioannis Katsoularis, who is also a consultant physician in cardiology at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, said that his study results show that acute cardiovascular complications are an important clinical manifestation of Covid-19. His team’s findings also show how important it is to hasten the Covid-19 vaccination, especially in the elderly who are at a higher risk of developing acute cardiovascular problems.

Experts in Sweden did not include patients who had previously had a stroke. Krister Lindmark, a consultant medical doctor in cardiology and co-author of the study, explained that this was done deliberately because it would be difficult to quantify the risk of Covid-19’s contribution to acute myocardial infarction and stroke if individuals who had experienced it were included.

“Because the risk of recurrent acute myocardial infarction and stroke increases after the first event,” Lindmark said The Sun, Tuesday (3/8).
