In a few days time 13 Schiedam residents again infected with the coronavirus

Schiedam – The number of corona infections in Schiedam is increasing again. Although the lung virus was diagnosed in 15 Schiedam residents in the past two weeks, 13 new cases have already been detected in three days.

The counter of the number of Schiedammers with a corona infection is on Friday at 283, on Tuesday there were 270.

The number of corona infections detected in the region has increased by 130 in the past five days. A peak can be seen especially in and around Rotterdam, with 95 new reports. Timo Boelsums is a doctor at the GGD and lists the statements at Rijnmond. It is possible that the increase is related to the easings of July 1, the doctor acknowledges. “We see that behavior in humans is changing. Meetings are being resumed, which could explain the increased number of infections.”

The main insight with the GGD is that most infections occur in a family context. “The larger the family and the more family gatherings, the higher the chance of infections.” But work-related infections also stand out. Colleagues infect each other because the one and a half meter rule cannot always be followed. “Healthcare, industry and port are the places where we now see smaller outbreaks,” Boelsums tells the regional channel.

The infections that are published daily show a wave. “If there is a small outbreak somewhere, you often see that people get sick on the same day and have themselves tested. Then a small peak can be seen on that day,” Boelsums explains. “It is important for us to look at the global trend over the days and weeks.”

The contamination figures show that people between the ages of 20 and 40 are well represented. “They are people who can get tested easily and perhaps also come into contact with each other more in the family, social and work environment”, Boelsums explains.

There is no clear indication of why the Rotterdam region is so striking in the figures. “After the intelligent lockdown, the virus has largely been extinguished, but in urban areas there is still a certain degree of contamination that persists. This can now lead to local outbreaks when the measures are relaxed and you come back into contact with other people”, says the GGD doctor. “We still hope to suppress it with contact and source research.”

According to Boelsums, it is still too early to say whether new measures are needed. “If we see that it continues to rise, we need to see what those groups are, where the infections occur and how we can best act on them.”

The risk of infection is still small, but it continues to go on, the doctor says. He emphasizes continuing to take hygiene measures seriously. “Provide space, ventilation and if you have complaints: stay indoors and have yourself tested.”
