Health – Regensburg – Corona crisis causes calm in shipping – Health

Regensburg / Nuremberg (dpa / lby) – In the corona crisis there is less activity on Bavaria’s rivers. A spokeswoman for the waterways and shipping administration in Nuremberg said that the number of freight ships on the Main-Danube Canal had decreased by around 25 percent compared to the previous year.

Day excursion boats and pleasure boats are not allowed to sail, and cabin shipping is also announced until the end of May. The latter is particularly used by tourists from the USA, Australia and Asia who cannot even arrive, said the spokeswoman.

The operating times at the locks have been reduced. Instead of working around the clock, they only work between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. “Night drives remain possible if there is an urgent need, in advance.” So the shipping is hardly hindered by the shorter operating time.

The situation in the area of the Regensburg Waterways and Shipping Office is comparable. The spokesman concluded that fewer freight ships and no tourist and excursion ships. That is why there is less operation at the locks. The persistent dry weather is more of a concern there – especially because of the section of the Danube between Straubing and Vilshofen that is free of barrages.
