Health Insurance Switching Rates Drop at the End of 2023: What’s Behind the Trend?

Jan 9, 2024 at 11:26 am

Just before New Year’s Eve, a lot fewer policyholders exchanged their health insurance for another one than a year earlier. At the end of 2023, 1.2 million Dutch people switched, 6.5 percent of the total number of insured people.

At the end of 2022, there was still a record transfer. At that time, 8.2 percent of insured people opted for a different health policy. That was one and a half million Dutch people. But at the end of 2023, the switching percentage dropped back to a normal level: 6 to 7 percent.

According to health insurers, this is due to some special circumstances in the record year. At the end of 2022, there was very high inflation and high energy costs. Consumers were less affected by this at the end of 2023. The group discount for basic insurance will also expire at the end of 2022.

The switching percentage has not yet been finalized. Health insurers expect it to rise to somewhere between 6.6 percent and 7.1 percent this month.

Officially you can choose a new health insurance policy for 2024 until the end of January. But then you would have had to cancel your old health insurance before New Year’s.
