Endocrinologist Uģis Gruntmanis, who worked in the USA for 22 years and became a professor at the University of Texas, returned to Latvia last year because he wanted to achieve good changes in the Latvian health system. In his homeland, as he now admits, Gruntmanis has proved unnecessary. He is on the road again and will move back to the United States, in New Hampshire, in September, where he will work at Dartmouth College.
Gruntmanis foresaw difficulties in advance, according to an article by Tatjana Žagare-Vītiņa in the magazine “SestDiena” in 2009. “But I have always said that I would like to return to Latvia in the future, although I have been told that it could be difficult because my professor’s degree is not recognized in Latvia, and I don’t know if I would be ready to start all over again,” Gruntmanis said at the time. last year tried.
In order to be able to work in Latvia, he was required to go through the process of recognition of professional qualifications. Yale and several other US universities did not have enough documents, the medical professor had to take an exam at Riga Stradins University together with 6th year students. After half a year of struggle, Gruntmanis’ doctor’s qualification was recognized, but these were not the only obstacles he faced in Latvia, Gruntmanis told the portal “Delfi.” They are also linked to his decision now.
“Basically, I have no choice but to move back to the United States. The things that I really wanted to participate in Latvia from the bottom of my heart went to me.
