“But despite the current SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus epidemic and the number of infections in Germany, regular patient supply with blood preparations must be ensured,” emphasizes Damaris Kriegs. Some important blood preparations would only have a very short shelf life. Every working day in Germany, at least 15,000 blood donations would have to be obtained in order to guarantee the care of seriously ill patients in the clinics. “Many sick people receive preparations made from donated blood for the rest of their lives,” explains the spokeswoman for the blood donation service.
In the medium term, people with tumor diseases in particular would have to rely on the continuous administration of blood preparations in order to survive the side effects of the therapies. Around a fifth of all blood preparations required are required for cancer patients. “At the moment, the supply of blood preparations is fairly stable,” explains Kriegs, pointing to a possible drastic change with regard to the widespread spread of the coronavirus.
