Hasidic Jews, arrested one by one at the exit of a secret tunnel, dug under a Brooklyn synagogue… This strange scene took place Monday evening at 770 Eastern Parkway, world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch community in New York ( UNITED STATES). For more than a year, young believers have allegedly created a 6 m wide passage between the synagogue and a building housing former women’s baths. Their motive? It remains unknown.
When their business was exposed by neighbors, Rabbi Braun decided to seal the tunnel. But when the construction team arrived on site, some young people intervened and tried to reopen the passage with hammers, forcing the police to intervene. Clashes then broke out against a backdrop of conflict between the leaders of the synagogue and members of the Chabad-Lubavitch group. A dozen people were arrested, including ten charged with obstructing the administration and disturbing public order.
