The big Harley trail, the first and only from the manufacturer, sees a military uniform arrive on its back. Khaki green and a big GI star are here to celebrate the history of the US military and its business with Milwaukee. This Pan America Special is not intended for troops or combat but recalls alliances, commitments and men.
HD has supplied motorcycles to the US Army since World War I. But it was during the second planetary conflict that the firm created the famous WLA, a multirole motorcycle that would be used in many theaters of operations. Between the models made in the United States plus those from Canada plus the impressive stock of spare parts, almost 120,000 motorcycles will be produced.
The Pan America paintwork is directly inspired by the “Olive Drab” used for the WLA. The star also reminds us of the Sherman tanks deployed en masse during the war.
But this special series is not there to give us the blues of the dark hours. Quite the contrary. It is part of the new “Enthusiast” collection; a new movement at the MoCo, which will produce a new series each year in limited quantities on a particular theme.
It reminds us of the “Icons” class, with an Electra Glide Revival to get the ball rolling… not giving away just yet.
No additional equipment, M16s or bonus Rambo posters. The technical specs are strictly identical to the production model. As a reminder, the Pan America Special trail bike is equipped with a 150 horsepower twin, additional protections, semi-active suspensions, active cornering lighting, a 6.8-inch color TFT screen and everything a bunch of piloting aids; traction control, interconnected braking, hill start assist, torque feedback control, ABS cornering, wheelie control, tire pressure monitoring, cruise control and seven Riding Modes.
IM asks for $800 more; available with spoke or spoke rims. It is marketed only at Uncle Sam, a country where patriotism and the military spirit are anchored in the national culture.
