New York State Governor Cuomo has announced his resignation following allegations of sexual harassment. Several politicians, including US President Biden, had previously called for his resignation.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced his resignation. This will come into force in 14 days. The office will then be taken over by Vice-Governor Kathy Hochul, who would be the first woman to rule the state with more than 19 million inhabitants.
Cuomo draws the conclusions from allegations of several women of sexual harassment. A month-long investigation found that Cuomo had sexually molested eleven women. There were unwanted touches, kisses, hugs, inappropriate comments and he suggested to an employee to play “strip poker” while on a business flight. In addition, Cuomo created a “hostile working atmosphere” for women and a “climate of fear”, according to the attorney general Lititia James.
Cuomo again denies allegations
Announcing his resignation, Cumo said, “I love New York and I would never want to be unhelpful in any way.” The best way he could help is to step aside and let the government go back to governing.
He rejected the allegations again. “My lawyers have reviewed the investigation report in the past few days and have already denounced numerous problems and errors.” The most serious allegations were not substantiated by the report. The allegations and the investigation report are politically motivated. His lawyer Rita Glavin also denounced errors and omissions in the report for around an hour.
In his statement, Cuomo also apologized to the women concerned. “But that doesn’t mean there aren’t eleven women I’ve hurt. And I apologize from the bottom of my heart.”
Resignation demands also from Biden
The democratic politician had been in office since 2011. He had only been re-elected two years ago. For a long time he was considered a beacon of hope for the Democrats. He had been hailed for leading New York through the worst phase of the corona pandemic last year and had even been traded as a possible presidential candidate.
For several months, however, he has been under criticism. Several politicians from the ranks of his democratic party criticized his leadership style. Many called for his resignation – according to new investigations, including New York Mayor de Blasio and the chairman of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi. US President Joe Biden also called on Cuomo to resign. “I think he should resign,” Biden said of his New York party colleague.
