He didn’t smoke, he didn’t drink, he never had anything. Nevertheless, Hans de Breet died on Friday at the age of 62 from the corona virus. “You don’t want to know what hell it is to tell his 97-year-old mother,” says his son Jordy.

Jordy (28) is devastated. “My father was always positive. He did everything for us. I was able to set up my artist agency because he used to drive me everywhere. I played pictures with his speakers. Nothing was too crazy. And now this. I am broken.’
Hans was born and raised in Amsterdam and moved to Amstelveen a long time ago. There he worked for the Social Insurance Bank.
In supermarket
It is not certain where he contracted the corona virus, although Jordy suspects that it was in the supermarket. He didn’t feel stuffy, didn’t cough much, but got a high fever the day after his birthday in mid-March. Just like his wife. “They spent practically 24 hours in bed together for days.”
His 97-year-old mother also fell seriously ill during the same period. Pneumonia. Maybe caused by the virus, maybe not. Her situation seemed much more worrying. “The doctors expected her to live only three days. She was given morphine to ease the suffering. “
Goodbye
The family, including the sick Hans, said goodbye to her from behind the window of her house. But she did not die. She even recovered wonderfully. Jordy’s mother also got better. “Instead, my father had to be admitted to the Amstelland Hospital in Amstelveen.” He ended up in intensive care and was put to artificial sleep.
At first it seemed to go well in the hospital. His lungs got cleaner, the infection disappeared. The doctors talked about Hans being one of the first IC patients to go home. But when Hans had to wake up, he didn’t. The coronavirus was found to have caused four stroke.
While his family was at his bedside in protective clothing, he passed away.
Healthy
“It is very surreal,” says Jordy. “He was very healthy. He always played tennis in the summer. Maybe he should have done that in the winter, but he never had anything. I told his mom, my grandmother. You don’t want to know what hell that is. “
Jordy has seen with his own eyes how deadly the virus can be. “It is a fucking virus. For real. When it was announced that all catering had to close, I had invited some friends to my home. We were laconic about it, thought it wouldn’t go that fast. But now, now my father has died. “
