JAKARTA – Symptoms dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) on child have to watch out for. Symptoms in children vary from those seen in adults. Therefore, parents must know it.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) dengue hemorrhagic fever is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV). This virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever cannot be spread directly from one person to another. The symptoms are mild and can be mistaken for the flu or other viral infections.

Young children and people who have not been infected before tend to have milder cases than older children and adults. However, serious problems can develop.

The most common symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash. Most cases will get better in a week or two.

Some people develop severe dengue fever and require hospital treatment. These include rare complications characterized by high fever, damage to lymph and blood vessels, bleeding from the nose and gums, enlarged liver and failure of the circulatory system.

Symptoms can progress to massive bleeding, shock, and death. This is called dengue shock syndrome (DSS). While the symptoms of dengue fever in children include vomiting, nausea, pain behind the eyes, abdominal pain, water retention and anxiety.
