Mixed breed dog, Labrador, toy poodle: many dog breeds are popular in Lower Saxony. In Hanover, however, tastes have changed in the past year.
Hanoverians particularly like mixed-breed dogs. At least that’s what a pet insurance survey shows. Accordingly, most of the dogs born in 2023 and registered with Agila insurance were mixed breeds. Rhodesian Ridgeback, Chihuahua, French Bulldog and Toy Poodle follow in places 2 to 5.
What is striking in the evaluation is that many other dog breeds came out on top last year. Although the mixed breed also took first place among the most popular dog breeds, it was followed by the Labrador, Poodle, Dachshund and Havanese in the 2022 evaluation.

The most popular dog breeds in Lower Saxony
Across Lower Saxony, the top three places in the rankings have not changed compared to the previous year. The most common dog breed, as in the state capital, is the mixed breed. They are followed by the Labrador and the French Bulldog.
The Australian Shephard has slipped from fifth to fourth place, displacing the Golden Retriever. The Havanese was also more popular than the Golden Retriever in 2023 and is now in the top 5.
