“The way to happiness” – brochures with this promise are currently landing more and more in Hamburg’s mailboxes. Behind it is the extremist Scientology organization, as the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution declared in a warning. In the corona pandemic, Scientology wanted to recruit members with an alleged health campaign.

Especially in times of crisis, the organization tries to establish contact with people, said Marco Haase, spokesman for the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution. He said it was a perfidious tactic to get targeted contact information from people who are in a personal crisis.

In Hamburg, booklets with the title: “How to prevent the spread of diseases through isolation” are being distributed. The brochure is part of a so-called Scientology health program – including an online presence and courses. Often readers cannot immediately see who is behind the alleged offer of help and advice. This is a well-known tactic of the organization because it has a rather bad reputation in Germany, according to the protection of the constitution.

Organization under observation since 1997

The Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been monitoring the organization since 1997. It is classified as extremist and anti-constitutional because its goals are not compatible with basic democratic values. The Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution therefore asks for information on brochures, flyers and other recruitment attempts. In any case, they will be treated confidentially.
