Long before our time, the Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31st – at that time, however, people celebrated their harvest as well as the beginning of a new season and the coming calendar year. The horror factor already existed with the Celts in Ireland: They believed that on this special day contacts with the realm of the dead would be possible.
Today Halloween is haunted almost everywhere – especially in the US. But the trend has also caught on in Europe; Zombies, witches and vampires hang around at numerous parties this year, eating brain jelly, drinking blood lemonade and dancing to creepy music. We’ll show you where you can celebrate – here are seven cool Halloween events in Europe.
Derry Halloween in Londonderry, Irland
If you want to go back to the beginning, Ireland is the place for you! Europe’s biggest Halloween festival is that Derry Halloween in Londonderry – a vibrant city on the banks of the River Foyle in northwest Ireland. More than 35 years ago, the inhabitants of the city brought the spooky festival to life.
From October 29th you can be there when night owls from all over the world create a program of art, delicacies, music and culture. Particularly spectacular are, for example, the magical Awakening the Walls, the colorful carnival parade, impressive fireworks or the terrifying Little Horrors Family program, which even the little ones have a lot of fun with. At the last horror break before Covid-19 in 2019, 140,000 visitors were counted.

Halloween in Germany: horror fun at Frankenstein Castle and in the Movie Park
Most horror friends know the story of the young Swiss Viktor Frankenstein, who created an artificial human in his laboratory. In Hesse there is a castle that even bears the name of the fearless researcher.
on Frankenstein Castle has been celebrated since 1977 until the blood freezes in the veins. On more than 3000 square meters you will encounter gruesome monsters and special shows provide nightmares in the old walls with their gloomy crypts. You can visit the castle from October 22nd to November 6th.
Also in Movie Park Germany In Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, the annual Halloween Horror Festival takes place again this year. The grounds of the amusement park will be haunted by gruesome figures until November 7th. Eight mazes, a DJ and lots of monsters set the mood.

Parque Warner in Madrid, Spain
A whole amusement park that dresses up for the horror festival – in the Warner Park In Madrid, visitors can still be there until November 1st, when witches and zombies celebrate and dance at the big Halloween parade.
The whole park is decorated with pumpkins and black cats and there are spooky attractions and events everywhere. The “Tunel del Terror Inferno” is particularly popular with older visitors – here you will encounter some well-known scenes from Warner horror films.

Gruselkabinett Le Manoir de Paris
The old walls of the Gruselkabinetts Le Manoir de Paris scary! It continues in a gruesomely beautiful way inside – here you will encounter well-known horror characters such as the bell-ringer of Notre-Dame or the phantom of the opera. The particularly brave spend a whole night at the Royal Hôtel Paradis, where a few monsters live.
From October 22nd to 31st, terrible decorations, scary music and spectacular shows ensure that you won’t soon forget the horror cabinet Le Manoir.

Spooky Days at Walibi in the Netherlands
Even the little ones have a lot of fun with the creeps – the Walibi amusement park in Holland organizes the Halloween Spooky Days especially for kids from six to 12 years of age. The little ghost hunters can go hunting for monsters all over the park.
At the same time, the older kids, aged 16 and over, also have Halloween Fright Nights in the park. In total darkness, the brave go looking for Eddie the clown this year. To do this, you have to dare a ride Into the Darkness, among other things. You can also attend a dinner in a bloody hospital full of terrifying experiences – if you are into slaughter.

Bran Castle in Romania
Where can it be creepier than in the home of Count Dracula himself? Transylvania, or better known as Transylvania, is worth visiting all year round. Medieval chambers of the old Bran Castle– the supposed home of the blood-sucking Count Dracula – are so gruesome that your blood freezes in your veins.
This experience is topped with a special Halloween tour, during which you will be guided through the imposing property and be haunted by some creepy figures on the way, while you learn the horror stories of the bloodsucker in person. Daring visitors can even spend a night in the coffin here.

Vienna Ghost Run, Austria
In Austria it is a tradition to welcome old friends every year on Halloween: deceased relatives who, according to legend, come to visit on the night of October 31st to November 1st are greeted with water, bread and a lamp.

A very special event is the Vienna Ghost Run in Vienna. Under the motto We run away from the Grim Reaper, all kinds of creepy characters make their way here. Zombies run away from werewolves and even do good in the process: Those who run here support children with lung disease with their contribution.
