Spotify recently unveiled its EQUAL hub to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. Following this launch, the audio leader will now extend its global commitment to the equality of women in music with its new “EQUAL” program, which will begin this month: May 2021.
The global initiative is uniquely designed to promote gender equality in music. Only 1 in 5 artists on the charts is female. The first artist class of Spotify EQUAL, which launches the program, includes Ghanaian Afrobeats and Afro-fusion singer Gyakie, real name Jackline Acheampong, who is the first African creator to be selected. The 20-year-old singer, who recently released her debut EP “Seed”, has gained popularity not only in Ghana, but also in Nigeria and Kenya, where her single “Forever” is a fan favorite with her remix with Omah. Other female artists selected for the first promotion include American rapper Saweetie, Brazilian pop singer Duda Beat, British singer-songwriter Griff, Mexican Natalia Lafourcad and German singer Zoe Wees.
