Gripping testimony in ‘Make 2020 Great Again’: Tanja has to live on 100 euros a week | TV

TVLast Wednesday, Frances Lefebure (32) and her team launched the ‘Make 2020 Great Again’ promotion. With this they want to use the end of the year to draw extra attention to the theme of child poverty. They also call on the whole of Flanders to give a Christmas present to children in poverty.

To better understand what a life in poverty really is like, Frances meets up with Tanja. She is a single mother of 2 children who has to live on 100 euros a week. “I am glad that Tanja wants to meet me because this is not an easy subject to talk about,” says Frances when she waits for Tanja and the 4-year-old Kenji at the children’s playground. Frances learns more about Tanja’s financial situation: “I have been under collective debt mediation for almost 7 years now. My living wage goes to a debt counselor and she pays my bills. I draw 100 euros every week with which I have to come. When I go shopping, I bring my calculator. When people pass by, I try to hide it. ”

Frances also wants to know whether her children notice anything about this: “When we go to the store, Kenji sometimes asks for sweets. I often have to say no and that is very difficult. And I often have to deny my daughter things too. As a mother, you just want to see your kids happy. I don’t want them to feel the same stress that I have. ”

Just like Tanja and Kenji, an incredible number of families live in poverty. Anyone who wants to give a Christmas gift can do so by surfing to www.makebelgiumgreatagain.be. There you can buy gifts worth € 10, € 25 and € 40. A gift of € 40 is also 60% tax deductible. You can also choose in which category you want to buy a gift: baby toys, sports equipment, trips, books or toys. Together with the Children’s Poverty Fund, Make Belgium Great Again ensures that these gifts reach the right children (0-18 years). In addition, each child can choose his own gift, so that everyone gets what he or she really wants.
