Green wave via app: test phase started in Chemnitz

A pilot project on environmentally friendly city traffic starts in Chemnitz on Monday. Smartphone apps are intended to help you adapt your own driving behavior to the switching of traffic lights.

Around 40 volunteers have so far found themselves in Chemnitz for the test phase of the “CITRAM” (Citizen Science for Traffic Management) research project. This was announced by the project partner, the company TSC from Essen. She had actually expected twice as many prospects. Three streets were selected for the project: Leipziger, Frankenberger and Annaberger Straße.

With the traffic light phase assistant through the green wave

The participants get two apps to optimize their driving behavior. Behind the[ui!] ECOMAT app “hides the so-called traffic light phase assistant. This shows the driver whether the next traffic light will probably still show red or green if he continues at the same speed.

“As a driver, I know whether it is worth driving quickly to the traffic lights or whether I can no longer get through the green phase and can already roll out,” says Benjamin Dahmen, project manager at TSC. The app also shows a timer at the traffic light for how long it will remain red. “This helps to decide whether the driver starts the engine or not,” said Dahmen.

With the help of the app, unnecessary acceleration processes should be avoided and the “green wave” should be used as well as possible. With the “enviroCar app”, participants can evaluate their own trips, such as fuel consumption and travel times on alternative routes.

Further participants possible

In addition to Chemnitz, the tests also take place in Hamm and Krefeld. The Federal Ministry of Transport is funding this project in the so-called Modernity Fund with a total of 1.72 million euros. The city of Chemnitz will receive a proportional grant of around 90,000 euros.
