Greece takes measures against historic heat wave | Abroad

The temperature has also risen well above 40 degrees in recent days. Even nights offer little cooling. In urban areas, the temperature sometimes does not drop below 30 degrees. The persistent heat prompted authorities to hold emergency consultations on Friday at the headquarters of the Civil Defense in Athens, Greek media reported.

Air-conditioned buildings are being opened to citizens in several places in the country. The government is also sending air-conditioned tents and containers to camps where migrants are received. Greeks are being urged to refrain from activities that could lead to fires, not to travel unnecessarily and to use water and electricity sparingly.

The end of the heat wave is not yet in sight. The extreme temperatures could last for two weeks, according to some estimates. Doctors advise people to stay out of the sun and not drink alcohol.
