The Government will close schools as of Monday and will reassess the third term on April 9th. Nightclubs will also be closed and there will be restrictions on entry to shopping centers and other commercial spaces.
The measures announced on Thursday night will still be combined with others that the executive will approve in a meeting of the Council of Ministers. Among the package of initiatives to deal with the coronavirus, António Costa also announced a “special mechanism” to ensure the salaries of parents who stay at home to care for children up to 12 years of age. An instrument “that ensures remuneration together with the employer”, declared the Prime Minister.
Madeira closes schools, clubs and day centers
The Regional Government of Madeira decreed this Thursday the closure of all schools from next Monday and until the end of the Easter holidays, on April 13. In a statement, the executive added that he also ordered the closure of all nightlife establishments that move large numbers of people, namely discos, without needing until when.
The Regional Government, led by the social democrat Miguel Albuquerque, also decided to restrict visits to homes and other institutions for the care of the elderly to a direct family member, referred by the institutions and during restricted hours (from 2 pm to 5 pm).
So far 78 cases of covid-19 have been confirmed, with a recovery recorded at the São João hospital, in Porto. According to the latest bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health, released at 10 am on Thursday, March 12, most of the cases were concentrated in the north of the country (44 cases), 23 confirmed in the Lisbon region and Tagus Valley, five in the Center and five in the Algarve. DGS also reported 637 suspected cases.
