Google recently unveiled a new set of features at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, showcasing its commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) across various products and services. Despite recent criticism surrounding its Gemini implementation for AI image generation, Google is pressing forward with its AI-powered advancements.

Google Messages Gets Gemini Integration

Starting this week, Google Messages is introducing a beta feature that integrates Gemini, enabling users to access AI-generated suggestions for crafting messages within the app. Currently, Gemini integration in Google Messages is only available in English.

Enhanced AI Features for Android Auto

Google is rolling out new AI-powered features for Android Auto. The platform now includes the capability to provide summarized versions of long text messages and offer contextual insight for group chats. First announced last month, this feature also suggests quick replies to help streamline communication for users.

Improving Accessibility with AI

Addressing accessibility needs, Google has made updates to its Lookout app. This app, designed to assist visually impaired individuals, now generates AI-powered captions for images that lack accurate captions or alt text. The feature is being rolled out to users worldwide and currently supports English. Google also introduced improved screen reader support for Lens in Maps, allowing TalkBack to provide audio descriptions of places and signs when users point their phone’s camera in the respective direction.

Productivity Enhancements

Google is extending support for handwritten notes within Google Docs on Android phones and tablets. This feature enables users to use their finger or stylus to make handwritten notes and highlight specific points within a document, with various pen styles and colors to choose from.

New Features for Wear OS

With regards to Wear OS, Google is introducing features that enhance user experience. The Google Wallet passes can now be accessed directly from the watch, allowing for easy access to boarding passes, event tickets, gym memberships, and loyalty cards. Users can also receive voice-based directions for transit. Additionally, the option to mirror directions from a smartphone or follow compass-guided navigation is now available.

Fitbit App Update

Google is incorporating support for multiple data sources, including AllTrails, Oura Ring, and MyFitnessPal, to provide comprehensive health and fitness data within the Fitbit app. By integrating data from different apps, alongside Fitbit’s own data, users can gain a holistic view of their health and activity.

Expanding Audio Output Options with Spotify

Google is expanding the audio output options on Android by introducing Spotify support through a dedicated switcher on the home screen. Users can now easily switch between different audio sources and continue listening from where they left off, expanding on the previous support for YouTube Music.

With these updates, Google reaffirms its commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology across various domains. By employing AI-driven innovations in messaging, accessibility, productivity, and wearables, Google aims to enhance user experiences and streamline daily tasks.
