Goodbye Space Station

Jakarta

Along with the most sophisticated development and technology space, the space race has intensified in recent years. In 2022, several countries recorded new achievements in this competition.

In the future, outer space is expected to become more hectic with lots of exploration missions. Not just space subscriber countries, such as the United States (US), Russia and Europe, but there will be more and more players relatively new to the space competition, such as China, Saudi Arabia, India and South Korea.

The following are the 2022 records in the space race, summarized by detikINET from various sources.

1. China builds a space station

Three Chinese astronauts return to Earth after completing a six-month mission space station China, Sunday (4/12) around 20.00 local time.

The three were sent into space last June to complete construction of the Tiangong space station. They boarded a capsule departing from the Shenzhou module and traveled for about nine hours.

The Shenzhou-14 mission, which consisted of astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, was a success. The Tiangong Space Station is designed as an orbiting laboratory in the style of the ISS space station currently operated by the United States and Russia. Over the next decade, China plans to send two manned missions to Tiangong each year.

2. Artemis 1 Orion arrives on the Moon

NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft arrives at the Moon on November 22. After losing contact for about 34 minutes during Artemis 1’s maneuver, Orion was able to reconnect when the signal was restored and the aircraft sent back images of Earth in the distance.

As this was a test flight, there were no astronauts on board. Instead there are three dummies with thousands of sensors. “The sensor has an idea of whether the environment is going to be good for humans,” said NASA astronaut Zena Cardman.

If the flight goes well, the astronauts will join them on subsequent trips, first in orbit around the Moon. Subsequently, the third edition of the Artemis mission will bring the first woman and the first non-white person to the surface of the Moon.

3. “Prevent Doomsday” Mission

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) aircraft. NASA which he crashed into asteroid in September, he managed to push his goal. The asteroid is now orbiting faster and marks the first time humans have managed to change the motion of a space object.

The plane crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos on September 26, 2022, but NASA does not know whether or not the asteroid was successfully pushed. The plane crashed into Dimorphos, which is 10.9 million km from Earth, at a speed of 22,000 km/hour.

NASA launched the DART mission to asteroid Dimorphos as part of an “avoid the apocalypse” test, i.e. defending Earth against dangerous asteroid threats. Even so, Dimorphos and Didymos aren’t actually asteroids that threaten life on Earth.

4. The more powerful James Webb telescope is operational

The James Webb Space Telescope worth $10 billion has just started its science operations in July 2022. The most powerful telescope has already demonstrated its ability to reveal impressive new details about our universe.

James Webb never ceases to amaze with the latest images he has captured and opens up new insights into our universe. The image captured by James Webb was even shown to the public by NASA, one of them through a giant billboard in Time Square, New York, thus attracting more and more attention from the public.

The James Webb images released by NASA include images of the galaxy in a more distant stage of maturation than expected. James Webb has also recently revived the so-called Pillars of Creation. The capture is considered a brilliant demonstration of James Webb’s ability to peer into the universe through clouds of dust and to imagine regions of space where new stars are born.

5. Russia leaves the ISS

like an impact Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Russian space agency Roscosmos has announced its departure from the International Space Station (ISS). They have officially declared that they will no longer work with global partners to carry out scientific research on the ISS.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has created a serious rift between Russia and Western countries, especially the United States, and has also had an impact on cooperation relations in space.

Not only that, Russia it also decided to stop supplying rocket engines to the United States. Roscosmos will also stop servicing rocket engines previously delivered to the United States. As of now, the United States still has 24 engines, and Russia intends to give up because it no longer wants to provide technical assistance to the United States.
