The Dutch Central Bank admits its own mistakes slavery past

On Friday, the Dutch Central Bank (DNB) apologized to the National Slavery History Memorial for its contribution to slavery. The apologies come after it was revealed in February that the bank was involved in the slavery practices of the Netherlands during the colonial period.

DNB acknowledged responsibility in February after research by Leiden University showed that the bank had contributed to slavery. The Dutch government has not yet issued an apology.

French authorities expose major wine scam

French police this week broke up a network dealing with the sale of wine allegedly from the Bordeaux wine region.

In reality it was about cheap wine from other regions. The French prosecutor’s office estimates the scale of the scam at hundreds of thousands of bottles. On Monday, about twenty people were arrested in and around the Médoc region for illegal trade.

Tobacco advertising is definitively banned

Tobacco and e-cigarette advertising will no longer be visible on the streets and in most shops from Friday. Cigarettes must also be the same in colour, design and material from then on.

State Secretary Maarten van Ooijen (Public Health, Welfare and Sport) calls the new rules “concrete steps towards the smoke-free generation”.

Van Ooijen states that in this way tobacco products disappear “further out of sight” and become less attractive, “so that quitting smoking becomes easier and starting more difficult”.

Germans can now determine their own gender

The German government says that from now on residents of Germany can determine and change their gender (gender) and first name themselves if they want to. Citizens only need to register as such at the registry office.

The measure makes it easier for transgender people, intersex people and so-called non-binary people who feel neither male nor female. The German Child Protection Association supports the plan for the simple procedure.

US companies pay travel costs for employees who want an abortion

Major US companies such as Disney, JP Morgan, Amazon and Meta will pay for the travel costs of employees who have to go to another state to have an abortion. Last Friday, the nationwide right to abortion was scrapped in the US, allowing states to decide for themselves whether it is allowed or not.

The US Supreme Court decided Friday that abortion is no longer a right in the US. Abortion is now illegal in nine states – all states where Republicans are in power – and a further 12 states are in the process of banning them. That means that women in those states have to travel far if they want to have an abortion.

In the Netherlands, abortion is still part of the penal code.

Ben & Jerry’s still for sale in Palestinian Territories

Ben & Jerry’s ice cream brand will still be available in Israeli settlements in Palestinian territory.

–

Earlier, the ice cream maker’s founders decided to stop selling in the settlements because it wouldn’t fit Ben & Jerry’s values. Parent company Unilever now announces that it is selling its stake in the ice cream brand in Israel.

The new owner is Avi Zinger, who already had a sales license for the ice cream brand. He plans to sell the ice cream in Israeli settlements, but under the Hebrew and Arabic name.
