Sekiro, Samourai Shodown, Nioh 2… Ghost of Tsushima almost comes after the battle of the samurai games. A “fashion” that the game’s artistic director, Jason Connell, cannot really explain, like his competitors before him. “Great minds meet,” he tries. I think more seriously that the figure of the samurai or the ninja is both immediately identifiable and very inspiring. For Infamous, our previous title at Sucker Punch, we wanted to make a superhero game. From there, a field of possibilities opened up to us, and it is the same with the samurai. He comes with a story, representations, already nonexistent works: films, series, comics and even games. You start from this imagination to better build your own. “
The storm is approaching.

The quiet path of the samurai
PlayStation 4 exclusive available Friday and the last major game on the machine, with The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima tells the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai from feudal Japan, Kamakaru era, who had to face the Mongol invasion on Tsushima Island in 1274. To do this, he had to learn the way of the ghost. “It’s the story of a samurai in particular, the story of a transformation,” said Jason Connell. You must understand what makes him a samurai, to better accompany him in his transformation into a ghost. The gameplay of course invites you to fight, by wielding katana and kunai, by diverting attention or by insinuating fear in the minds of enemies. “If you are good, you can kill in one or two shots, in style,” added the artistic director. But it is also possible to prefer stealth, silence.

Feel the beauty and serenity
As the title suggests, the other hero of Ghost of Tsushima is the island itself, an open world for which the Sucker Punch teams have given everything. “Our main objective was to immerse ourselves in a realistic, coherent, silent world too,” explains Jason Connell. Let the player experience the beauty and serenity of the island, Jin’s homeland, and the brutal contrast with moments of death and destruction. ” As in Red Dead Redemption, the player can follow the story, the missions, or a sunset, a wild fox. “We tested the game, and some players spend hours not succeeding in the game, but in doing something else, more personal. “

A tribute to Akira Kurosawa’s films
Sucker Punch provides several features to capture these suspended moments, with a photo mode that allows you to adjust colors, depth of field, music or even the wind. The wind plays an important role in the game, since in this world in constant motion, it serves as a guide for the player, “in a minimalist, immersive, cinematographic way”, specifies Jason Connell, quite proud of his find. There is even a cinema mode with grainy black and white image, horizontal black bars or Japanese voices, as in a film by Akira Kurosawa. It is also called the « Kurosawa Mode ». “The idea is really to let the player be absorbed, inspired by a landscape, a scene, for a moment, insists Jason Connell, and do what he wants with it, a piece of art, and share it. “
