Gold Miners Clash Kills 100 People, Begins with 2 Citizens’ Conflict

RUN, KOMPAS.com – About 100 people died in clashes between gold miner from Chad north, said Defense Minister General Daoud Yaya Brahim on Monday (30/5/2022).

Clashes broke out on May 23 in Kouri Bougoudi near the Libyan border, sparked by the usual feud between two vexed people, Daoud Yaya was quoted as saying. AFP.

He added that the number of victims was around 100 dead and at least 40 injured.

The clashes took place in the rugged Tibesti Mountains in central Sahara, about 1,000 kilometers from Chad’s capital N’Djamena.

The discovery of gold there triggers a rush of miners from across Chad and neighboring countries, and tensions often run high.

The clashes between the miners took place between Mauritanians and Libyans, Chad said.

He spoke to AFP by phone from the area, the current location said he was with a large military contingent sent to help restore order.

“This is not the first time there have been clashes between gold miners in the area, and we have decided to suspend all gold mining in Kouri until further notice,” he said, adding that “most (mining in the area) is illegal.”

The incident was first announced on Wednesday (05/25/2022), when Chadian Communications Minister Abderaman Koulamallah said several people were killed and injured, but gave no further details.
