“Decolonizing Education Funding”. This is the theme chosen at the global level for the celebration of the Global Week of Action for Education (SMAE) 2023. In Burkina Faso, this theme constitutes a major innovation, according to the National Coordinator of the SMAE.

“Usually, we are on themes related to quality, access to funding. This year, the Global Campaign for Education has decided to adopt this theme. If we do not decolonize, States will not be able to have their own vision, to develop their programs according to their educational goals to move towards development. That’s the novelty; to tackle this problem head-on so that the situation changes”explained Tahirou Traore.

Tahirou Traoré, National Coordinator of SMAE.

As part of the planned activities, “the production of a declaration to launch SMAE 2023; the production of a TV program on the theme of the “decolonization of the financing of education”; a press conference to inform national and international opinion on the need for decolonization of education financing and regional forums on decolonization of education financing »quoted by M. Traoré.

For a better participation of its structures in the 13 regions of Burkina Faso, the National Coalition for Education for All intends to continue awareness-raising and questioning activities until the start of the school year in October 2023, according to the National Coordinator.

Summary of SMAE in 23 editions

“Since 2000, the Global Campaign for Education, in collaboration with national education coalitions, has organized the SMAE each year around various themes in order to challenge Heads of State and Government as well as the international community for the respect of the commitments they made in 2015 to ”Ensure equal access to quality education for all and promote lifelong learning opportunities” in 2030” , recalled Tahirou Traoré.

In 2023, that is to say 23 years later, the holding of the SMAEs in Burkina Faso, if we are to believe the report drawn up by the national coordinator, has enabled progress to be made and to record quite encouraging results.

“From 2000 to now, we have carried out a lot of campaigns and we have made a lot of arrests. This has made it possible to improve the indicators a little, especially in terms of access to education. Over the period from 2000 to now, we have a gross enrollment rate of over 80%.

Today, at both primary and post-primary level, girls have more access to school than boys… In 2014-2015, the budget allocated to inclusive education did not exceed 2,500,000 CFA francs, but today today with the advocacy that we had to do, the budget is more than 200 million CFA francs”said Mr. Traoré, among other things.
