Hindu Umaru Ibrahim, activist and indigenous leader, said: “The world must end the age of plastic. We will protect indigenous peoples. Our land in Africa must not become a garbage dump.”

Dr Jane Goodall, DBE recipient, Ethnologist And conservationists say: “We need to end the age of plastic because it is killing wildlife. Moreover, we can no longer use recycling methods with the plastic we use. Recycling is not the solution to the plastic crisis. But we must reduce plastic production.”

Nemonte Nenquinmo, Waurani leader and winner of the 2020 Goldman Environmental Prize, said: “We must end the age of plastic. Because it is contaminating our world. It becomes pollution in water sources and in the land.”

Lee Jung-Jae, an Emmy Award winning actor famous for the Squid Game series, also joined in sending a message to this meeting. “Our world doesn’t have a ‘back’ button to start over like the games we play. Therefore, a unified global plastics treaty is the only way to end the plastic pollution crisis.”

Over 99% of plastic is made from fossil fuels. And today’s plastic production is still increasing uncontrollably. These are the catalysts that make the climate crisis worse.

Graham Forbes, Head of Greenpeace’s Global Plastics Treaty Negotiation Team and Head of Global Campaigns, Greenpeace USA, said: “The Global Plastics Treaty would require reducing plastic production by at least 75% by 2040 to ensure that we keep global surface temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Protect our climate and health including protecting our rights and our communities. This is an opportunity for our generation to solve the problem of plastic pollution for the future of our children and grandchildren. And we can no longer ignore or let time go to waste.”

Thousands of representatives participated in this negotiation. including ministers from many countries around the world who came to the meeting to draft the World Plastics Treaty The United Nations has set a goal that the treaty must be successfully negotiated by 2024.
