It’s been 20 years since the blockbuster Gladiator hit cinemas. Since then there have been rumors and theories that they want to produce a sequel. But at the moment it looks rather bad for Gladiator 2. The star now revealed in an interview which idea had been planned for the return of main star Russell Crowe.
When Gladiator was released in 2000, success was not long in coming. Director Ridley Scott’s mammoth project grossed more than 457 million US dollars worldwide. The film was also showered with numerous prizes: Gladiator received five Oscars and thus wrote cinema history. Actually, one would assume that a sequel would be a done deal. So far nothing has come of it. Instead, there are mainly wild rumors and theories about how a sequel could go on in the future.
The main star himself has now spoken about one of them. In an interview with Screen Rant, Russell Crow revealed that he was discussing a pretty wild theory for the second part with the gladiator producer Douglas Wick. Crowe says, “I haven’t spoken to Doug in a very, very long time. The last time he said he had this great idea of carrying Maximus out of the arena and they pull that big rock back and put it in one Cave, the stone is rolled in front of it and it is anointed with oils. Then the stone is pushed back and it comes out. And I said, ‘Doug, I don’t think we have any rights to this story.’ But that was a very, very long time ago and I don’t think he particularly valued my sense of humor at the time. ”
Equating his figure Maximus with Jesus might not really go down well with every viewer. Still, it’s an idea that Ridley Scott has at least been considering. As Wick reports, Scott is currently looking for a way to bring the gladiator back to life. Of course, it remains unclear whether this will actually work. Until an official confirmation for Gladiator 2 appears, the Jesus theory should also be treated with caution for the time being.
