Gijs Staverman resigns, deliberately conceals the reason: why?

Gijs Staverman will leave NPO Radio 2 in a month and a half; he resigned from KRO-NCRV. Why is he so secretive about the next step? “That is very conscious.”

Striking news from radio land: Gijs Staverman is leaving the largest radio station in the country, NPO Radio 2. He has a daily show there in a prominent place, namely during lunch, but has resigned. This is usually accompanied by the announcement of a transfer, but that is not the case here. Is he leaving radio?

From the transmitter

Gijs is very secretive about it in his show. “I have submitted my resignation and I am also leaving this wonderful radio station NPO Radio 2. After ten years. I’ve had ten fantastic years here. What exactly I am going to do is a bit complicated to tell, but I will keep you informed.”

This is a strategic choice, Luuk Ikink explains in RTL Boulevard. According to him, the revelation about the transfer will follow. “He’s only going to do it later. If he were to tell it now, he would have to leave the channel immediately. Now he hasn’t told me and he doesn’t have to yet.”

Radio 10?

Often when radio stars announce their transfer, they are immediately kicked out of the station so that they cannot easily tempt listeners to move with them. “Usually we suddenly know where people are going and then they are suddenly thrown off Radio 2. That’s how it happened with Wouter van der Goes and Frank van ‘t Hof,” says Luuk.

That doesn’t happen here. “He’ll leave first. Of course he will do something else. There are a lot of rumors. He could go to JOE, Veronica and also Radio 10.”

What does Patrick say?

According to Luuk, it will be the last channel. “I suspect, and am almost certain, that it will be Radio 10. The other two don’t quite fit and Radio 10 will also have some places available where he can sit. It also fits his profile very well.”

What does Patrick Kicken, our country’s most important radio columnist, think about it? “I think that in terms of vacancy he fits best with JOE, where they have also excelled in radio for the mentally less fortunate. What is it that you are approached at so many stations as if you were a toddler and you can’t even tie your shoelaces?”

TV-career

However, it will be Radio 10, Patrick also expects. He writes in his Speaking-piece column: “I think his vanity made him choose a station where the owner also has a TV show on offer and he can present Battle of the Bands, for example.”

“Then you will of course soon end up at the station where Gerard Ekdom is leaving, Radio 10.”
