Gijón presents four projects to European funds amounting to 18 million euros | BE Gijón | Today for Today Gijón

Gijón has presented four projects, one of them jointly with other cities, to the ‘Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan 2021’, totaling almost 18 million euros. These are two of the first calls open this year to apply to these resilience funds, but in no case will they be the only one.

Low emission zones

There are two for different areas of the city. In total they add up to 14.5 million euros, in which 90% of the financing is requested, with the Consistory assuming the remaining 10%. The first proposal, ‘Zone of low emissions in La Calzada’, aims to improve air quality in the western part of the city, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise, as well as promoting active mobility.

The actions contemplated in this project, whose budget amounts to 9.3 million euros, go through platforms and lanes for prioritizing collective transport, bicycles and personal mobility vehicles, connected to the rest of the city; adaptation of urban spaces for the implementation of pedestrian routes and improvement of accessibility (ecomanzana); greening of streets and resurfacing with pollution and noise absorbing material; deterrent parking; improvement of intermodality (intermodal space with a single platform at the La Calzada stop); and implementation of a public system of bicycles and other personal mobility vehicles, and its extension to the rest of the city.

The second is the project ‘Accessible mobility in historic centers- Cimadevilla’, where a combined action is proposed, which improves mobility and accessibility in the neighborhood, and at the same time, the improvement of air quality and the reduction of noise from the Road Traffic.

The actions contemplated include the acceleration in the implementation of a low emissions zone, through the expansion of the access control system; the adaptation of spaces and pedestrian routes and the improvement of accessibility, through unique platforms in the Tránsito de las Ballenas, in the main west ring of Cimadevilla and the extension of this ring; and the acquisition of electric buses, whose circulation will be prioritized. The total budget for this action amounts to 5.2 million euros, of which the City Council, if this project is approved, will co-finance 10%.

Commerce digitization

The third of the projects is ‘Digital and Sustainable Gijón Commerce’ to promote the digital and sustainable transformation of Gijón’s retail trade, improving its competitiveness and energy efficiency, and reducing costs and the environmental impact of commercial activity.

All of this will be developed through various actions such as the ‘Gijón Commerce Digitization Plan’; the development of a digital control and profitability tool for micro-companies and the self-employed in the retail trade; another specific for the management of purchases in the textile sector; and the installation of sensors and other surveillance and monitoring systems to reduce energy consumption in commercial establishments.

The total budget for all these actions amounts to 1.1 million euros. The City Council requests financing for 70%, co-financing the remaining 30%.

Urban mobility

The last of the projects is being developed together with Valladolid, Logroño, Valencia, Vitoria and Fuenlabrada in the so-called ‘Maas Connected Cities’. This project aims to develop a multi-city digital platform, a national reference, for the implementation, development and innovation of urban mobility in cities, also serving as a governance tool for municipalities, and placing security and safety at the center. simplification of this tool for citizens. The objective of this platform, which will be implemented in open source, is the capture, processing and exploitation of integrated mobility data.

The complete project has a budget of 27 million euros, of which 2.3 million are those that correspond to the City Council of Gijón for the development of all the planned actions. In the event that it is approved, 90% co-financing is requested, with which the Consistory must contribute the remaining 10%.
