Germany’s largest New Year’s Eve is once again taking place in Berlin. The entrances to the festival mile in front of the Brandenburg Gate were closed around 8:00 p.m., as the organizers announced. Previously, long lines formed in front of the five entrances, as the spokeswoman for the event said. Visitors had to expect strict security controls. Fireworks, bottles, sharp objects and larger bags are prohibited on the party area. The event area is fenced.

Kerstin Ott, the boy group East 17, pop star Frank Zander and the Swedish rock band Mando Diao have announced themselves for the evening. They want to celebrate the last hours of 2019 with many other musicians and artists.
For the first time in the German capital, rockets and firecrackers are not only banned on the party mile there, but also in some areas beyond. Because groups of young men have thrown guns at police officers and firefighters in some parts of the city in recent years, the Senate established two additional prohibition zones. On Alexanderplatz and in several streets on Pallasstraße in Berlin-Schöneberg, no one is allowed to have fireworks with them or fire them. Around 140 officers in the two zones are to check whether everyone adheres to them.
Nationwide, a debate about the sense and nonsense of the bulge in the face of climate protection as well as noise and aggression around the night at the turn of the year had already relaxed. Hours before midnight there were numerous reports of injuries and fires from many regions in Germany.
