Giant Black Spot Appears on Jupiter, What Is It?

JAKARTA, kilat.com- Outer space is full of mystery. There is always something unusual lurking in the depths of the mysterious space. With advances in technology, space agencies around the world are uncovering mysteries and theories.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) continues to share images and snippets of information to reveal various aspects of outer space.

Recently, NASA has shared an image on its official Instagram account in which a large, dark shadow is visible on Jupiter.

The shadow on the left side of the image appears to be cast by Jupiter’s moon Ganymede.

NASA revealed that NASA Solar System Exploration’s Juno spacecraft captured the stunning image.

As per the space agency, the image was taken during its 40th close-range mission with the giant planet on February 25, 2022.

NASA also mentions that eclipses on Jupiter occur more frequently than we experience on Earth because the planet has four large moons that frequently pass between Jupiter and the Sun.

“In just one week, Ganymede transits once; Europa, twice; and Io, four times. And because Jupiter’s moons orbit in a plane close to Jupiter’s orbital plane, moon shadows often appear on the planet,” NASA said.

NASA says that resident scientist Thomas Thomopoulos created this enhanced color image using raw data from the JunoCam instrument.

“At the time of the raw image, the Juno spacecraft was about 71,000 kilometers above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 55 degrees south, and 15 times closer than Ganymede, which orbits about 1.1 million kilometers from Jupiter,” said NASA. (nda)
