Germany warns of the biggest crisis in world history in 2023

Disruption of supply chains due to the Ukrainian crisis will lead to a shortage of fertilizers and deprive farmers of the ability to produce enough crops, according to an article in the German newspaper Compact, quoted by Trud.

“Next year is one of the biggest food crises in human history,” said Matthias Berninger, head of department at Bayer AG, a multinational chemical and pharmaceutical corporation.

His view is shared by German economist Matin Kaim, who estimates that global hunger could affect up to 100 million people.

According to the head of the UN World Food Program, David Beasley, the lack of food will provoke large-scale migration flows, against the background of which the crisis of 2015 “will look like a summer picnic.”

Of particular importance to European countries are the potash fertilizer plants in the Urals and Belarus, which are now under Western sanctions. As a replacement, the use of nitrogen fertilizers is proposed, but, as the newspaper writes, due to the increase in gas prices, they cannot be produced at affordable prices.

We remind you: Following the launch of a special military operation to denationalize and demilitarize Ukraine, Western countries have stepped up sanctions on Moscow. The restrictive measures mainly affected the banking sector and high-tech products.

Many brands have announced their withdrawal from Russia. The Kremlin called the new sanctions an economic war, but stressed they were ready for such developments.

Calls for the abandonment of Russian energy sources have become stronger. At the same time, Europe is already facing rising fuel prices and provoked food inflation, which has caused discontent among the population.

Annual inflation in 19 eurozone countries accelerated to 7.4 percent in March.
