The end of the core in 2022, the end of coal by 2030. The Czech neighbors will face an energy earthquake in the coming years as a result of the long-term transformation of the German energy sector. However, according to some experts and a possible reliance on the core, a possible departure from Energiewende constitutes political suicide, which is also true at a time of soaring energy prices, and especially natural gas.

However, an open letter signed by experts and intellectuals from a number of countries recently called for a review of German energy policy. The initiative was given by the British environmentalist John Law. This move is said to lead to higher carbon dioxide emissions, as Germany will have to rely increasingly on stable sources of natural gas and coal, at least in the first post-atomic and post-pandemic years.

The shape of the European energy mix and the role of the core in it is now an increasingly intense debate within the European Union. “We need more renewable energy. They are cheaper, carbon-free and home-made. We also need a stable source, a core, and, during the transition phase, gas, ”said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, in support of the requirement to recognize nuclear energy as a clean source. In this way, it met the demands of France or the Czech Republic.
Some activists are skeptical about the higher use of energy from nuclear power plants. They point out that the share of nuclear energy in world electricity production is declining.
This is stated in this year’s World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNISR 2021), Which Mycle Schneider, an energy consultant and its leading author, introduced the Czech Republic. The environmental association Calla and the Rainbow Movement took part in the presentation of the report.
“I find it worrying that the gap between the general public’s perception of nuclear energy and the actual state of the sector is growing. The contribution of nuclear power plants to energy supply is declining to insignificance on a global scale. Many of the projects that are being talked about remain only in the realm of wild fantasy, “said Schneider.
According to the report, 415 nuclear reactors were in operation in 33 countries in the middle of this year, which is seven more than in mid-2020, but 23 less than in 2002, when the number peaked at 438 reactors.
According to her, the share of nuclear energy in world gross electricity production continues to decline slowly but surely, from a maximum of 17.5 percent in 1996 to 10.1 percent in 2020.
