Steinmeier announced his desire to run for a new term on May 28, 2021. The Social Democratic Party of Germany supported his decision. Then, the intention to support Steinmeier in the elections was expressed by representatives of the Free Democratic Party of Germany, the FDP, the Greens and the CDU/CSU party union. Thus, Steinmeier secured ahead of time the support of the majority in the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, the two chambers that make up the Federal Assembly in Germany.

In addition to Steinmeier, there are three other candidates. Gerhard Trabert, doctor from Mainz is put forward by the “Left”, the right-wing Alternative for Germany is proposed by the economist, Professor Max Otte. Another candidate proposed by the Free Voters party is the only female candidate, the astrophysicist Stefanie Gebauer.

The Federal Assembly this time will consist of 1472 participants. The president is elected for five years.
