Germany: car rushes through carnival parade, several injured

A car crashed into a carnival parade in Volkmarsen, Land Hesse (central Germany) on Monday, leaving “several injured” but no deaths, local police said.

The driver of the vehicle “was arrested,” police said without providing details of the suspect’s circumstances or motives as part of Germany celebrates “Rose Monday”, the culmination of the carnival festivities. “We cannot say whether it is a malaise, a car breakdown or an intentional act,” said a spokesman for the police.

According to local media reports, a metallic gray Mercedes station wagon drove into the crowd and at least 10 people were injured, including children. The daily Bild speaks of 30 injured, including 10 in serious condition.

Many victims were lying on the ground and taken care of by rescue teams deployed en masse in this village of about 7,000 inhabitants, located in the regional state of Hesse.

According to witnesses quoted by local media, the vehicle – driven by a man aged 20 to 30 – struck the crowd around 2:30 p.m. and accelerated. The police are calling not to speculate on this event and not to post images on social networks.
