Germans enjoy a bit of normalcy at Pentecost

Relaxation of the corona rules

Hamburg (dpa) – From cafés to theaters, from open-air cinemas to swimming pools: At Whitsun, many people in Germany enjoyed a piece of regained normality.

In Hamburg and Berlin, the reopened outdoor restaurant was well attended – despite the sometimes modest weather. The sun seekers who have made their way south can look forward to this.

“If we hadn’t had any closings due to Corona, it would have been a completely normal Saturday evening,” said a police spokesman in Hamburg on Sunday. But as it was, the around 1000 people in the Kiez and around 1400 people in the Schanzenviertel were unusually large after the pandemic-related restrictions. According to the police, in some cases the prescribed corona rules were not adhered to.

In the capital, despite the moderate weather on Saturday, many people were also to be seen eating lunch outside or drinking a freshly tapped beer with friends – for example in the Prenzlauer Berg district. The open-air cinema in Berlin-Friedrichshain was also well attended. People strolled on Museum Island or sat by the Spree.

The Berlin theater scene is also coming back to life. After a compulsory break for months, another premiere was performed in front of an audience at the Deutsches Theater. “Tartuffe or The Wise Men ‘s Pig” was shown outside on Saturday evening – the audience wrapped themselves in raincoats and blankets on the forecourt.

After the opening of tourism in Lower Saxony, many holidaymakers also traveled to the East Frisian Islands, mainly from North Rhine-Westphalia. Many guests had already come on Friday and the arrival traffic also stopped on Saturday, said a spokeswoman for the Ems AG. “The city is full,” said a police spokesman in Cuxhaven. “The sun is shining, the sky is blue, there are a lot of people.” To spend a long time on the beach, however, it is too cold.

The next low is already in sight for Whit Monday, which means gray and often wet weather for the western half. In some parts of Germany, on the other hand, a hint of the blissful month is noticeable: In the south and east it is initially sunny or slightly cloudy. The maximum values are then between 14 and 20 degrees, in the south and east between 19 and locally 25 degrees.

A little busier than in the past few months, but it was still quite quiet at Düsseldorf Airport. In search of better weather, numerous people set off from there to travel to the Mediterranean or the Canary Islands. Nevertheless, the situation at the start of the Whitsun weekend in the terminal is calm, said an airport spokeswoman on Saturday.
