When researching the novel corona virus, German scientists were able to demonstrate antibodies that prevent the virus from entering cells. “This is clearly a breakthrough that shows that we are on the right track for the development of a drug against Covid-19,” said Luka Cicin-Sain from the Braunschweig Helmholtz Center for Infection Research of the “Braunschweiger Zeitung”.
Cicin-Sain and his team said the report analyzed 6,000 different man-made human antibodies. The researchers found more than 750 antibodies that dock with the coronavirus – a prerequisite for successfully fighting the pathogen. Now the antibodies are tested for their effectiveness on cell cultures.

The aim of the scientists is not a vaccination but a drug to treat seriously ill corona patients acutely: “The active principle with which we work is the so-called passive immunization”, said Stefan Dübel from the Technical University of Braunschweig. “The effect is immediate: the antibodies take the potential away from the virus.”

The search for the best antibody candidate for a later drug should continue until mid-June, said Thomas Schirrmann of the biotech company Yumab involved in the project. Then the favorites had to be put through their paces and the development prepared for clinical practice. “Our vision is that the first corona patients will be treated with the drug in the fall,” said Schirrmacher.
