“The rule of law is tenacious and long-lasting,” said the German Interior Minister. “A milestone in the history of crime,” according to her colleague in the state of Lower Saxony. After thirty years, the German police finally managed to arrest a member of the fugitive RAF trio Klette, Garweg and Staub. This required help from the population.

The RAF (Rote Armee Faction) was an extreme left-wing terrorist movement that committed dozens of murders, bank robberies and assassinations, especially in Germany in the 1970s.

A tip in November last year put the police on the trail of Daniela Klette, now 65. The apartment on the fifth floor of an apartment building in Berlin was observed for a while. However, at the time of the raid, the police were not certain that she was the resident. She was home alone and did not resist. Her fingerprints were the deciding factor.

It turned out that Klette had been living in the rental home for years, even though it was not registered in her name. She had a fake Italian passport in the name of one Claudia Ivone, writing German media. According to her neighbors, she earned her money by giving math tutoring and selling Christmas cookies. She had a Facebook account where she posted photos of herself. She was active in a capoeira club at least until 2019.

Today it became clear that she could still be a danger. The residents of the apartment complex had to leave their homes at the end of this afternoon. The police officers searching for evidence had come across an explosive substance. That had to be removed first. Two firearm magazines and cartridges had already been found.

Long list

Klette, Burkhard Garweg (55) and Ernst-Volker Staub (69) are considered to be members of the third generation of the Red Army Faction (RAF), which was responsible, among other things, for the murders of Deutsche Bank CEO Alfred Herrhausen (1989). and politician and businessman Detlev Rohwedder (1991).

The three disappeared from the radar in 1993, after a bomb attack on a prison under construction near Frankfurt. The damage amounted to 63 million euros. After that attack, DNA traces of the trio were found. In the wreckage of the car that was used, police found a hair belonging to Klette.

The three are also linked to a failed bomb attack on a Deutsche Bank branch (1990) and the shooting of the American embassy in Bonn with firearms (1991). After going underground, they are said to have survived by robbing money transports and supermarkets. They allegedly stole more than two million euros.

They were searched for year after year. The reward for the tip that would lead to their arrest was 150,000 euros. Two weeks ago the police made another appeal in the German version of Investigation Requested. This resulted in 90 tips, but the decisive one had already been received in November, as it turned out yesterday.

Released

Yesterday it was also announced that a second suspect had been arrested, a man in the “wanted age group”, as the German Public Prosecution Service announced. Today it was announced that it was not Garweg or Staub, but someone else, who was sent away today.

Klette is in custody, but remains silent. The search for Garweg and Staub continues.
