German Police Crack Down on Distracted Driving with GoPro Evidence – Over 40 Fines Issued

SITTENSEN – Last Monday, the German police started a check with the “GoPro” with the aim of “distraction in traffic”.

Serious traffic accidents also happen again and again on German roads. Tragically, these often end in death or result in serious injuries to the vehicle occupants.

One of the main causes of accidents is distraction in road traffic, be it through smartphones, tablets and other technical communication and entertainment devices, or distraction through general behavior not related to car and/or truck driving.

While the presence of technology is constantly increasing, danger awareness is noticeably decreasing. The police are therefore increasingly focusing on dangerous and immediately underestimated behavior and are trying to make road users aware of this source of danger.

To punish the violations with evidence and also prevent false punishments, the “GoPro” was introduced as a special tool. This camera is mounted on the patrol car. This provides a better viewing angle in the truck cabin.

If a violation is found, a video recording is now made, which can be used as evidence in the proceedings. The technology also offers the possibility to view the video recording on site. In many cases it has been found that simply referring to the production of a video recording was sufficient to gain insight from those involved.

In addition to imposing fines, the officers’ main concern is to increase road users’ awareness of the specific dangers of distraction in road traffic and thus contribute to road safety.

To date, more than 40 fine procedures have been initiated as part of this audit. Many of these were documented and punished using video recordings. The control measures will last until Sunday.
