German cargo ship rams Princess Margriet canal bridge

A bridge over the Princess Margriet Canal on the border between Friesland and Groningen was badly damaged by a German merchant ship colliding with it. The bridge cannot be used at the moment.

The collision took place just before 20:30 near the Frisian village of Stroobos. Nobody was hurt. “But the crew and operating personnel are very scared,” says a Rijkswaterstaat spokesman RTV North.

In addition to the bridge, the wheelhouse of the barge also suffered considerable damage. The vessel is now safely moored a few hundred meters from the bridge.

It is not clear how the accident happened. Local media, including the Leeuwarder Courant, to say that there was fog at the time of the collision. The police are investigating the cause.
