Last week the romantic comedy Casa Coco premiered, in which Gerard and Joke can be seen together again. The main absentees from the festive evening were Gerard’s deaf daughter, Lara, and her family.
Misunderstanding
“She couldn’t tonight or I would have gotten her a deaf interpreter,” Gerard tells Story. “I’ve always done it when I had a theater premiere or a play.” It is sometimes incorrectly assumed that the deaf and hard of hearing cannot speak. “It’s a misunderstanding. People sometimes talk about deaf and dumb, but that’s not true. My daughter comes from the sixties, then it was enough to talk. She was not offered sign language at the time, even though she was deaf. That’s why she talks, she just doesn’t hear. So I only talk to her. It works well, even if it costs energy. Sometimes we write things down on a notepad, that works fine too.’
