The Dutch King Willem-Alexander on Wednesday, together with Queen Máxima, expressed his regret about their holiday to Greece. He did this in a video message on the Instagram account of the Royal House.

“It is with regret in my heart that I address you”, is how King Willem Alexander begins his video message after the Dutch population got upset for his trip to Greece. Last Friday, the king announced that he would end his journey early, Saturday evening he was already at Schiphol airport. Remarkable: he took off with a government plane and returned with a scheduled flight from KLM. The heavy criticism came after the Dutch population was explicitly called on to stay at home as much as possible now that the corona figures are turning red.
The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte had to confess on Friday evening that he was aware of Willem-Alexander’s vacation plans. He too came under heavy political criticism as a result. On Sunday afternoon he sent a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives in which he acknowledged that he had made “a wrong assessment”. “I bear full ministerial responsibility for this,” it said.
