A rain of roses for Saint Thérèse at Unesco

“After I die, I will rain roses. The words spoken by Thérèse de Lisieux shortly before her death in 1897 have definitely not been forgotten. While a Unesco delegation was received on Saturday December 4 in Lisieux to formalize the registration of little Thérèse among the birthdays commemorated by the institution in 2022 and 2023, a large distribution of roses was organized in the city. Thérèse de Lisieux “woman of culture, education and peace”, could we read on the word accompanying each flower.

Entering the Carmel of Lisieux at the age of only 15, Saint Thérèse experienced unprecedented fame after her death. Died at the age of 24 of tuberculosis, the young nun had written, in the secrecy of Carmel, her memoirs entitledStory of a soul. Published shortly after his death, these have had a worldwide impact: the book has sold more than 500 million copies, thus becoming one of the most outstanding works of French spirituality. The message, both simple and profound from the young Carmelite, touched the hearts of many faithful, naturally establishing her as a true saint. She was also canonized in 1925 by Pope Pius XI and appointed Doctor of the Church by John Paul II in 1997.
