Deputies with the Forsyth County, Georgia, Sheriff’s Office arrested Karima Jiwani, 40, on Thursday, May 18, for attempted felony murder, first-degree child cruelty, aggravated assault, and reckless abandon.
According to information reported by CNNthe sheriff said the child’s father had been identified ten months earlier, while the mother was found a week ago. She is accused of having abandoned, in June 2019, an infant of a few hours, in a wood. The baby was in tears, wrapped in a plastic bag and his umbilical cord was not cut.
According to the sheriff, the mother allegedly drove for a “long period” after the birth with the child in the car, “until she decides to tie the baby in a plastic bag and throw him in the woods to die.” According to the sheriff, the baby found four years earlier is today, a “happy, healthy and safe” little girl.
Karima Jiwani’s gesture is all the more incomprehensible since in the state of Georgia, the “safe places law” allows mothers to leave their babies in defined places without being criminally prosecuted. With this law, children 30 days old or younger can be left at a medical facility, fire department or police.
